The Green Dragon Inn Sign
The Green Dragon Inn Sign is a must-have for any fan of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. This laser-cut sign is a replica of the iconic sign that hung outside the Green Dragon Inn in Bywater, near Hobbiton.
The Green Dragon Inn was a popular meeting place for travelers and locals alike, and it was where Thorin and Company waited for Bilbo to join them on their quest to the Lonely Mountain. This sign is a perfect addition to any home, office, or man cave and will bring a touch of Middle-earth charm and nostalgia.
My version of the Green Dragon Inn sign has four layers and is sized at just under 17"x12" in both the single sided and double sided versions. The hidden base layer of 1/8" MDF provides extra rigidity and prevents warping. The layer under the Green Dragon is 1/4" thick Cherry which, when exposed to sunlight for a time will darken to a wonderful patina. The outline of the sign, the green dragon outline and facial detail and the layer underneath the lettering is 1/8" Walnut which provides a great contrast to the cherry layer. Finally, the dragon and lettering is all of 1/8" Maple with the dragon painted a contrasting green.
I've long had an appreciation for the books (I've read them a number of times!) and one of my very first projects was to make the Green Dragon and the Prancing Pony signs both of which hang in my office. I've since added to the collection and every piece which I've made hangs on my wall.
I also make both the Green Dragon and the Prancing Pony signs in double sided versions if you'd like to hang them in a way that you can see them coming and going (you supply the hangers).
